Dear friends,
During the last week or so, our newsroom has been hard at work, publishing three juicy story packages that showcase what The Markup is and how we do what we do.
First, Aaron Sankin was back with more predictive policing shenanigans, teaming up Markup OG Surya Mattu once again to dig through millions of data points to find that: predictive policing software is terrible at predicting crimes and costing resources that could be put to better use.
Then, Colin Lecher, in partnership with our friends at The 19th, revealed how gig nursing apps are disrupting the nursing care model, which has already resulted in unsafe work conditions for nurses (one nurse basically told Colin she just hopes for the best) and harmful outcomes for patients.
Yesterday, Lam Thuy Vo rounded out this impressive run with a stunning series on how the Ring doorbell’s social platform funnels suspicions from residents in (you guessed it) Whiter and wealthier areas of LA directly to the LAPD. After the stories published this morning, we started getting messages from friends, who own Ring cameras, about what they should do. Luckily, we have an entire guide for you: here’s how you can shop for security but with your values in mind.
We’re really proud of all our reporters and engineers, and thrilled that they’re getting some well-deserved recognition, bringing home a National Press Club Award, the NABJ Salute to Excellence Award, and ONA’s Excellence in Tech Reporting Prize (thrilling to be described as “nearly perfect”!) in the last few months. Nabiha’s been busy, too, heading to London last week for her appointment to the prestigious Scott Trust, which oversees the Guardian Media Group.
It’s been a packed fall, and there’s lots more to come—make sure you’re signed up for Klaxon and Hello World so you don’t miss a thing.
With deepest gratitude,
Nabiha & Sisi
