Announcing Five New Colleagues in The Markup Newsroom!

October 19, 2023 10:57 ET

Dear friends,

We’re immensely proud that at The Markup, we consistently attract highly talented folks to our small but mighty team, and we’re thrilled to introduce our five new colleagues to you today. With expertise in statistical research, machine learning, network security, and ed tech, they’re sure to elevate our work even further as we approach our fourth anniversary of publishing.

Get to know them below:

Natasha Uzcátegui-Liggett, Tomas Apodaca, Miles Hilton, Mohamed Al Elew, and Ross Teixeira

  • Natasha Uzcátegui-Liggett, Statistical Journalist. Natasha is passionate about empowering communities with the data they need to drive positive change; her projects focus on wielding statistics to help expose injustice and guide policies to address inequality.
  • Tomas Apodaca, Journalism Engineer. Tomas will support our investigative journalism by exploring data, reverse-engineering algorithms, and creating custom tools.
  • Miles Hilton, Full Stack Operations Engineer. Miles believes that code can be a powerful and flexible tool for justice and equity, and uses code to hold those who misuse it to account.
  • Mohamed Al Elew, Journalism Engineer. Mohamed will use their skills as a computer scientist and experience as a data reporter to probe black boxes and dispel virtual smoke screens.
  • Ross Teixeira, Data Journalist. Ross’s past research has always been at the intersection of technology and society. As a PhD candidate, he investigated topics including data privacy, network security, broadband availability, and remote learning platforms.

Read our announcement to get to know our new colleagues and the incredible projects they worked on before joining us. We can’t wait to see what this crew of brilliant engineers and journalists will bring to The Markup, and we’re beyond honored that they’ve joined us.

As the end of the year barrels towards us, we’re extra appreciative of your support, which helps us produce the very best journalism, tools, and blueprints to challenge technology to serve the public good—as well as assemble the unparalleled team that makes it all happen. We couldn’t do it without you.

With deepest gratitude,

Sisi & Nabiha
