Recently The Markup launched Citizen Browser, a first-of-its-kind research initiative designed to audit the blackbox algorithms that social media platforms like Facebook use to determine what content to show to different users.
In the short time that it’s been up and running, we’ve learned quite a bit about what stories Facebook amplifies and what it suppresses across various demographics. (See our tool “Split Screen” to explore what different groups of people see in their news feeds.)
In service of greater transparency, we published a detailed methodology that breaks down in detail how we built the tool and how it works, and we’ve shared our data and analyses in GitHub repositories. Now we’d like to create a space to answer any questions you have about Citizen Browser and the data we’ve uncovered so far.
Join The Markup’s editor-in-chief, Julia Angwin, and investigative data journalist Surya Mattu for our Citizen Browser Project Debrief call on Tuesday, April 6, at 1 p.m. ET to learn more about what Citizen Browser has told us about Facebook’s algorithmic actions.
