The 2023 list highlights leaders from the New York metropolitan area innovating in a variety of industries

NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 16, 2023 – Nabiha Syed, CEO of The Markup, has been named to the prestigious Crain’s New York Business ‘40 Under 40’ list for 2023.

Each year, Crain’s New York Business compiles a class of professionals younger than 40 who are at or near the top of their game. The list typically includes philanthropists, creators, CEOs, presidents, founders, community leaders and more from the New York area, highlighting their top accomplishments over the past year alongside their leadership within the community.

For this 2023 class, Nabiha, alongside all other honorees, were nominated by a colleague or peer and then selected through a rigorous review process by Crain’s New York Business editors and reporters.

In the profile story published as an accompaniment to the recent announcement, Nabiha is cited for her leadership at The Markup, working with the team to make its reported data open source and create free digital tools, like Blacklight, that help people engage with technology more mindfully. As CEO, Nabiha works with Editor-in-Chief Sisi Wei to build a strong reporting foundation for The Markup team to speak truth to power, and tell stories that reflect people’s humanity. To this day, The Markup team’s work has been cited in over 20 congressional investigations and has inspired 35 class-action lawsuits.

“I am honored to be recognized on Crain’s 40 Under 40 list alongside other leaders who are charting a new path with their organizations,” said Syed. “At The Markup, we understand how dramatically technology is and will reshape society – and we’re here to help the public make sure those changes serve the public good.”

This is only the most recent accolade for Nabiha who earlier this year received The NAACP-Archewell Digital Civil Rights Award presented by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for her continuous efforts in generating equity in the digital space, was appointed to The Scott Trust, shareholder of Guardian Media Group, and was also recently recognized as a “Tech Catalyst” by the Council of Urban Professionals in New York.

Nabiha is a proud resident of Brooklyn, where she serves on the Executive Committee of the New York chapter of the ACLU and on the board of the NYC-based New Press, which published The New Jim Crow as well as other landmark civil rights books. She also maintains an active pro bono practice including working with asylum seekers as well as freelance journalists through the media law clinic she co-founded over a decade ago.

This is an incredible honor for Nabiha, and the entire team at The Markup. Notable past honorees have included Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Damon Dash, Away co-founder and CEO Steph Korey, late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, former New York City Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi, Milk Bar founder Christina Tosi and YouTuber Casey Neistat.
