Dash brings his expertise in building a more humane, inclusive, and ethical technology industry

NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 8, 2021The Markup, a mission-driven media organization investigating how technology is reshaping society, has named Anil Dash, CEO of Glitch, as the newest member of its board of directors. With decades of experience in ethical technology, Dash will serve in a strategic role as the organization focuses on its next phase of growth.

“I’ve believed in The Markup’s mission from day one,” said Dash. “I’m honored and excited to join the board, and especially to support The Markup’s team in its vital work, especially during this critical moment for both the media and technology industries.”

In addition to serving on The Markup’s board, Dash is also on the board of directors for Data & Society research institute and The Lower Eastside Girls Club of New York. Before his current role as CEO of Glitch, he was the co-founder and managing director of Activate and co-founder and CEO of ThinkUp, as well as a contributing editor for WIRED magazine.

“We are delighted to have Anil join The Markup’s board of directors,” said David Boardman, chair of board of directors of The Markup and dean of the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University. “His background as a technology entrepreneur and his stature as a thought leader will be invaluable as we evolve into an indispensable source of news and understanding.”

This appointment comes at a high-momentum time for The Markup and its rapidly growing audience. Recently, the organization received a $2.5M grant from the Ford Foundation as part of its innovative Social Bond approach, released two investigations that revealed secret bias hidden in mortgage-approval algorithms and the preferential treatment that Amazon gives to house brands, and has sparked lawmakers to take action. Consumers and policymakers alike have come to realize the importance of data privacy, algorithmic bias, and misinformation because of The Markup’s work.
