Angie Waller
Research Manager, Special Projects
Angie Waller managed The Markup’s Citizen Browser project, our custom application that monitors what is being algorithmically broadcast to paid panels of Facebook users in the U.S. and Germany. Angie left The Markup in June 2022.
Before joining our team, she worked as a media producer and web developer at Data & Society, a research institute studying how technology impacts society. In 2020, she earned an MA in Computational Linguistics from The Graduate Center, CUNY, where she designed machine learning algorithms to classify and analyze online reviews and measure how interface design (like chili peppers) can lead to harm. She also holds an MFA from UCLA in New Genres.
Angie also publishes art books that expand on her research under the imprint Unknown Unknowns. The titles are distributed internationally, including at the Printed Matter and Vancouver Art Book fairs and at institutional libraries like the Whitney Museum and MoMA.
