Dear friends,
Ferris Bueller had it right, and he didn’t even know about frontier technology in 2023.
This week kicked off with an expansive Executive Order from The White House that aims to protect Americans from misuses of AI technology, including privacy violations, fraud, and cybersecurity threats (we broke it down here).
The EO coincided with the landmark AI Safety Summit in London, at which delegates from 27 countries gathered with leaders from the top AI companies to address the potential threats posed by AI and how to mitigate them—including unprecedented general agreement to give governments early access to new discoveries from AI labs.
In response to the Executive Order, we heard from a remarkable coalition of philanthropic funders, including the Ford Foundation, Macarthur Foundation, Heising-Simons Foundation, and Omidyar Network, rededicating their efforts to ensure that AI advancements serve the public good (we like the sound of that).
Next week, Nabiha will be at the Paris Peace Forum, where discussions about tech and safety will continue. It can all be a lot to digest, but this is what The Markup is all about. For the past nearly four years, we’ve been here to make sense of how tech shapes your world and proving the effects it has on the public.
For real time updates from The Markup in this critical time for AI and other emerging technologies, subscribe to Klaxon and get all the latest news.
With gratitude,
Nabiha & Sisi
