Dear friends,
We’ve had a jam-packed several weeks here at The Markup: from recognition by FastCompany as one of the world’s most innovative companies, to our first trip to SXSW with Dara Kerr leading her “Working for an Algorithm” panel, to a feature on our Life360 reporting by John Oliver on “Last Week Tonight” (!)—we’re thrilled by the impact our work is having.
More big news: the incredible Julia Angwin is stepping into a new editor-at-large role. Julia has been a true visionary as we have built The Markup over the last two years, and we’re looking forward to having her in a role that will include advising and writing her inimitable weekly newsletter.
With that, we are beyond thrilled to welcome Steve Adler, longtime editor-in-chief of Reuters, who joined us last week as interim editor-in-chief. Steve’s experience is unparalleled, and his proven leadership skills are exactly what we need to harness The Markup’s incredible momentum.
What’s Up With Ed-Tech?
Some of our most impactful reporting of late has been Todd Feathers’ reporting on ed-tech, and our March 29 event “Who’s Got My Data?” on YouTube Live was geared at teaching students how to protect their personal information as it is gobbled up by ed-tech companies. Our work does more than just uncover inequities driven by technology— we give readers some agency on what they can do about these issues. Check out the event recording, data protection toolkit, and more of Todd’s work here.
Next up: Our May fundraiser (are you following us on social media?) and even more to come on how we will keep up our fight for a more equitable digital world with a comprehensive education program based upon our groundbreaking work.
As always, we are so appreciative of your support, and I’m available to answer any questions you may have. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
All my best,
Nabiha
