At The Markup, we use technology to investigate technology. We often have to make our own datasets from scratch—and that means we scrape publicly available data so we can observe the world around us and share our analyses with you.
We were dismayed when Facebook shut down the accounts of the NYU Ad Observatory independent researchers who were uncovering the dark world of political advertising. Independent research into Facebook and other platforms remains critical. Scraping data legally in the public interest is what allows us and our peers to hold Big Tech accountable.
And the bottom line is simple: Scraping is not a crime.
