Since its launch in 2020, The Markup has punched above its weight, winning awards like the Gerald Loeb award, Edward R. Murrow award, and Fast Company’s world changing ideas award for its journalism.

In 2022/2023 two major series won prizes from a slew of contests: Still Loading, a sprawling national investigation into inequities in internet access, and Pixel Hunt, The Markup’s series uncovering the full extent of how tech tracks people across the web.

During the 2021/22 awards season, we were honored by awards particularly highlighting our work in Amazon’s Advantage, our look into the online giant’s self-preferencing and its antitrust implications; Denied, which revealed racial disparities in practice by mortgage lenders; and Citizen Browser, a first-of-its-kind project that opened the black box of social media algorithms by building a nationwide representative panel of users who share data with The Markup.

Here are the awards and honorable mentions The Markup has received from some of journalism’s most prestigious contests.
